Hypermobility and Physiotherapy

What is Hypermobility?

Hypermobility describes joints that move beyond the normal range of motion. Many people are naturally flexible and experience no difficulties. However, for some, this increased movement leads to pain, fatigue or frequent injuries due to reduced joint stability and differences in connective tissue.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) are a group of heritable connective tissue disorders caused by genetic changes that affect collagen. Each type has its own diagnostic criteria, but features common to many forms include joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility, and tissue fragility.

Common symptoms may include

  • Persistent joint or muscle pain
  • Fatigue or muscle weakness
  • Recurrent sprains, subluxations or dislocations
  • Fatigue or muscle weakness
  • Recurrent sprains, subluxations or dislocations
  • Poor balance or body awareness or coordination
  • Headaches, dizziness
  • Heartrate or temperature regulation issues
  • Tissue fragility – soft easily bruised skin, unusual scarring, slow wound healing
  • Genitourinary concerns, including bladder urgency, frequency, incontinence, pelvic pain or prolapse
  • Digestive issues such as bloating, reflux or constipation

Hypermobility is more than being flexible — it’s about how your body supports and controls that extra movement, and how your connective tissue affects your overall wellbeing.

How Physiotherapy Can Help

Physiotherapy plays an essential role in managing hypermobility. Our focus is to help you understand your body, improve joint control and build strength for long-term stability.

We can help you

  • Assess common multi-system areas of concern and provide structured feedback to your medical team if required
  • Reduce pain and fatigue
  • Strengthen muscles to support your joints
  • Improve posture and body awareness
  • Manage activity levels and prevent injury
  • Return to exercise and daily activities safely

Our Approach

At TMPhysio, we understand that every hypermobile body is different. Your physiotherapy program will be tailored to your needs, goals and lifestyle.

Your Initial Appointment

  • A detailed assessment and discussion about your symptoms and goals
  • In-depth assessment of joint range, control, and strength
  • Education on hypermobility and joint protection

Treatment Program

Your physiotherapist will create a plan focused on

  • Targeted strengthening for stability and control
  • Low-impact appropriate exercise
  • Balance and proprioception training to improve joint awareness
  • Education on safe movement and pacing
  • Supportive aids (taping, bracing, compression or ergonomic advice) when needed

Our goal is to help you move with confidence — focusing on control, not just flexibility.

What to Expect

Progress with hypermobility can take time, but small, consistent steps lead to lasting change. You may notice

  • Improved strength and stability
  • Less pain and fewer injuries
  • Increased confidence with movement

We’ll guide you through every stage and adjust your plan as you improve.

Common Questions

Do I need ongoing physiotherapy?
Not always. Many people benefit from an initial program and periodic check-ins as life or symptoms change.

Can I still exercise?
Yes! With the right guidance, exercise is one of the best ways to manage hypermobility.

Should I avoid stretching?
Overstretching can make symptoms worse. We’ll teach you how to maintain mobility safely without straining hypermobile joints.
